How do I get onstage?
There are two different ways to get onstage with Angel Burlesque.
Some of our shows are cast from Open Auditions. Check our calendar and website for the next audition opportunity. These shows are considered “production” style and are more scripted, usually have a theme and involve a longer rehearsal processes to create the routines. Examples of production shows are Nerdgasm, Miss Honey B’s Bourbon Boylesque, A Girl for All Seasons and Angel Burlesque's Tribute to the Muppets!
Other shows are “revue” style. These shows can be themed or not but generally will not have a storyline/through line. The rehearsal process is minimal and usually consists of routine feedback rather than routine creation. Performers put together routines (concept, music, costumes, choreography) on their own time. If you are interested in being a part of a revue show, send us a video of your routine.
What if I don’t have a video of my routine?
Come to a routine feedback session (calendar here) and show us your stuff!
What if I don’t have a routine?
Attend workshops! We’re here to help you learn how to do that! Workshops cover a wide variety of topics including burlesque basics, choreography, hair/makeup, costume creation [on a budget], routine development, gloves, boas, fans, stocking peels and more!
Do I have to have burlesque experience to perform?
No! Everyone has to start somewhere! Many people come to burlesque from other art forms (dance, belly dance, musical theatre, theatre, show choir, singing, etc.) but we’ve had performers who had very little or even NO performance experience and found a home in burlesque. Take burlesque workshops, take dance workshops, see as many shows as possible and just start playing in your living room and putting a routine together.
What if I can’t afford the workshops?
What if I just want to take workshops for fun but am not ready to be onstage?
Angel Burlesque workshops are a lot of fun! Participants take workshops for a variety of reasons including: improving performance skills, meeting new people, gaining confidence, and having a fun time! There is no pressure to perform but we love to encourage people to step outside of their comfort zones (even if stretching that comfort zone is to wear a sassy outfit in public! Maybe? Baby steps!!). Our workshops are judgment free zones!
What kinds of things are you looking for in a routine?
Above all, we are looking for people who entertain! We want performers who connect with an audience (not necessarily going out and interacting with the audience but who will take the audience with them on their journey). Due to show constraints, preferred routines are three to four minutes in length. Occasionally longer routines are accepted but the goal is three to four minutes. Not all routines have to be dance based or storyline/character-based but one or the other is a definite plus. Also, not all routines have to be “classic” or “sexy.” We’d say, pack away those quotation marks and give yourself free reign to express yourself! (in three to four minutes). We are looking for strong personalities, great routine concepts, well-polished choreography and strong costumes
Tell me more about this striptease aspect?
Not all burlesque has to feature striptease (see question below about variety performers). Generally, neo-burlesque performers will disrobe to pasties (sparkly nipple covers) and a g-string. Legally, your nipples and lady or man-bits in the nether regions MUST be covered. Some performers, especially new performers, choose not to bare as much. They will stay in underwear that has more coverage than a g-string. They choose not to remove their bras OR will do so in a way that keeps more coverage (i.e. netting bras, etc.) The utmost priority in a routine is that you are entertaining!
How do I become an Angel?
Angel Burlesque has a unique mentorship program called Teasers in Training (or TITs). TITs are matched up with an Angel mentor and fulfill a series of requirements that help you become a well-rounded performer. Completion of the TITs program does not guarantee membership in Angel Burlesque but it is a fun program and will help you improve as a performer. Generally, potential performers need to participate in at least one show before they will be considered for the Teasers in Training program.
What if I want to kitten or just help out?
Is this just for the ladies? What kind of age or body type are you looking for in performers?
Angel Burlesque believes “Real is Sexy” and wants to help everyone find his or her inner sexy self (and bring that onstage with lots of rhinestones and glitter!!) We celebrate different sizes, body shapes, gender orientation, gender identification and ages. Variety is the spice of life! Men are very welcome to perform burlesque also!
You must be over 18 (sometimes depending on venues, over 21) to perform or take workshops. Our workshop participants have ranged in age from 18 to 72!
There is no ONE look of who can be a successful burlesque performer—the utmost priority is that you are entertaining.
What if I want to just sing, dance or show my variety skill? Do I HAVE to strip?
We, of course, love the striptease but, no, not every person needs to do striptease to be a part of the show! We have showcased singers, non-stripping dancers, musicians, magicians, rope play, improvised comedy, puppeteers and even a sexy gentleman reading his erotic stories. Fire acts are discouraged because Katie Angel is a Nervous Nelly.
What are some good resources to learn more about burlesque?
We highly encourage potential performers to see as much burlesque as possible. YouTube is great and live performances are even better!!
